OMG!!!!!!!!!! By far the best wine I have ever tasted for the value! Only cost 100 kroner which is 12 Euro and its astounding, the mix of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvédre just compliment each other perfectly. So many different flavours hit me when I drank this, everything from cucumber to strawberry to a fruity vanilla icecream…. ok, am confused now. Please buy a bottle and drink it down!!!! I give this 95 points which puts it up there with stuff which costs 10 times this.

2007 Alamos Pinot Noir

This is not an amazing wine in the sense that I was really impressed with its finish, but its not often you get a Pinot Noir that you can drink and enjoy which is under 10 Euro, and this one was, hence the mention. Its a straight up and down Pinot with nice soft plumb after taste and a mellow feel to it, so for those who like a milder wine, this is the way to go. I am not the biggest fan of the French when it comes to Pinot, and this wine with its price and taste proves that for great wine at a great price, Argentina is still the place to be! 89 points for this.

2008 Shiraz Gnarly Dudes – Two Hands

Well, its been a while since I had a really good wine and it was good to end my dry spell with this belter from Two Hands. Its not the best wine from them, so I am already salivating about my next wine from them, as this was damn good. Cost me 25 Euro, and was worth every cent, as it was a classic round and warm Shiraz that you expect from the great Australian wine producers like Mollydooker and Ben Glatzer!  If you want a wine which is just great, then grab a bottle of this little beauty! 93 points from me.

Viu Manent Syrah 2007

There are a lot of great Syrahs from Chile in my opinion, but this one for the price rates right up there! I picked it up for about 15 Euro’s and it apparently scored 90 points by Robert Parker but I would even go so far as giving it 92, as it really is a nice warm wine that you just want to keep lapping up. Its also strong at 14.5% so unfortunately you can’t drink as many of them as you want, but if you want a wine which would be great with red meat, but also great alone then this is worth your effort.

Ceravolo 2007 Petit Verdot

First time in my life that I have had a Petit Verdot from Australia, and I will admit that its actually quite good. Very thick and heavy wine, even heavier than a Shiraz but with a really deep and interesting after taste. At 15% though you actually don’t want to drink it on an empty stomach or you feel it hit your head pretty hard!! I had the 2007 and paid about 15 Euro for it from a bottle shop, so a mid range wine but tasted more like a 30 Euro bottle would, so I can only recommend picking up a bottle if you are into heavy wines with plenty of texture. I give it 90 points.

Now that its gone a year since my last review I thought that it was a good time to either destroy the blog (goodbye Ozzie Wine Dude) or resurrect it from the ashes of burnt corks!

And resurrection it is… However instead of reviewing everything I drink (which drove me insane, as I could see how much I drank :) ), I am only going to review the wine I really like.

So from now on, its Great Wine only on this blog, and I will try and give a reason I like it, how much I paid for it, and even where I got it, so anyone who is interested and try it out themselves.

Cheers :)

Anakena – Carmenére 2007

Well funnily enough I met one of the heads of this Chilean Winery (Anakena) whilst in Santiago Chile, and we ate some fantastic food and drank some of his better selections, so I was keen to give this Carmenére a go. In fact before my first trip to Chile in 2005, I have never tasted this grape and was surprised when I heard it existed. For those who don’t know it, its a bit like a Cab Sav but with a more tange after taste, and has a bit of Zinfandel twang to it.

This wine though is definitely a bit young and really should have been cellared for a bit, as even though it was okay after I “aired it” it still was a bit too “bity” and not anywhere near a subtle wine. It was not expensive though and was competitive in pricing. If you see a Anakena, give it a go, but if you have the opportunity cellar it for a couple of years at least. Alright. So I have finally consumed wine that I would rather burn in a lamp then drink, but as I was so shocked and dismayed at the situation I did not take a picture (I did not have my phone/camera with me). Maybe its a good thing I can remember what it was, as I may get sued, but it was a rioja from 2003, and it tasted like grape juice left out in the sun for a month, then someone added kerosene to it and called it wine…. blaaaahhhh, I want to track the vintner down and slap him very very hard!!!!

Alkoomi Shiraz 2007

I had never heard of this wine or even the vineyard, however the Franklin River area in WA is one of the fastest and interesting emerging areas for wine in OZ at the moment. I love my aussie Shiraz so I knew I would like this, and I did, however it had a very unique flavor which I would not say was typical Shiraz at all… In fact I thought it was a bit like a Navarra wine (Spain) with a very caramely aftertaste. I really liked it though and was tempted to say “Damn”, but I think needs a bit of time, so for now its a Bloody Great. I have no idea of the price, so cannot comment on this. august 004

Castiglion Del Bosco 2003

Ooh this was nice!!! As everyone knows (and I mean everyone) I love Tuscany so am terribly bias when it comes to drinking a Sangiovese grape… This wine was in the manageable class in terms of price, so there was an expectation also that it was going to be okay, and it was!! Gave a real punch in the face (if you can be punched in the face nicely) as it had a complex aroma and taste. I won’t go in to details as it is a classic Italian and was bloody great, and should be tasted when given the chance! Oh and I consumed this with my friend Jennifer, however as it was at a BBQ I think I drank the entire bottle before she could get any :) august 001
